Explore FY2009 Budget
Agency: Education
The Department of Education (DOE) is responsible for providing primary and secondary education to all NYC children, which is approximately 1 million students, from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. The DOE is divided into 32 school districts, which oversee approximately 1,500 schools. The DOE employs 79,000 teachers and spends approximately $14,000 per student yearly. The DOE is required to cater its educational services to all learning abilities and circumstances, and therefore provides special education, alternative programs, English Language Learners programs and adult education. The DOE is accountable for students' math, reading and writing state test scores, as well as ensuring that they pass the State Regents exams. Joel I. Klein is the Chancellor of the Department of Education; for more information, go to www.schools.nyc.gov.
