The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) is responsible for responding to fires, medical emergencies, disaster, terrorist acts and other public safety issues. In total, approximately 16,000 people work for the FDNY. This includes the Emergency Medical Services Unit, which provides the city with EMS specialists to respond to medical emergencies. The Department also works to advance public safety through its fire prevention, investigation and education programs.
