Explore FY2009 Budget
Agency: Health and Mental Hygiene
The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) is responsible for protecting and promoting the health of New Yorkers, including their physical and mental health conditions. DOHMH works in coordination with large institutions such as schools and restaurants to promote access to and use of healthcare, cleanliness, disease prevention, and to encourage smoking cessation. DOHMH tracks diseases and health statistics within the City and compiles comprehensive reports that can be used for future prevention and awareness. DOHMH targets those neighborhoods that demonstrate greater needs for improved health care systems. Additionally, they promote animal health and safety to both reduce human illness and to ensure that animals are not abandoned. Dr. Thomas R. Frieden is the commissioner of DOHMH; for more information, go to www.nyc.gov/health.
