What your money funds:
The Queens Borough Public Library is an independently operated system. It oversees 61 community libraries and a Central Library, which is located in the Jamaica area. The Queens Borough Public Library's funding goes to the Adult Literacy Program, CLASP Program, and other operating subsidies. The majority of funding goes to the operating expenses of libraries throughout the borough. This includes supplies, property costs and other contracted services.
- The System has approximately 22 million publications in circulation and 1,150 computers for public use.
- All library branches in the Queens System are open 6 days per week, and 10% of the branches are open 7 days a week. Each library is open on average 43.7 hours per week. Approximately 15.2 people visit these branch libraries yearly, and the System has 827,000 card holders.
- Adult Literacy Program: Joint partnership between City University of New York, the NYC Department of Education and the New York and Brooklyn Public Libraries. It provides educational opportunities for adults and older youth, such as Adult Basic Education (ABE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and test preparation.
- Connecting Libraries and Schools Project (CLASP): collaboration between the public libraries and schools that brings teachers, school librarians, public librarians and parents together to encourage children to read at an early age. Librarians visit local schools to sign up children and parents for library cards and to reach out to teachers, students and school librarians.
