What your money funds:
The New York Public Library's funding goes towards the Bronx Library system, the Staten Island Library system, and the Manhattan Library system. The system offers services to residents in Manhattan (38 branches), the Bronx (35 branches), and Staten Island (12 branches). The lump sum payments to the libraries help with general operating costs and programs, as well as funding toward the Adult Literacy Program.
- The System has approximately 19 million publications in circulation and 2,854 computers for public use.
- All library branches in the New York System are open 6 days per week, and 6% of the branches are open 7 days a week. Each library is open on average 51.7 hours per week. Approximately 15.5 million residents visit these branch libraries yearly, and the System has 2.6 million card holders.
- Of the four Research Libraries located in Manhattan, one is open 7 days per week, and the rest are open 6 days per week. Approximately 2.1 million residents visit these libraries yearly.
- Adult Literacy Program: joint partnership between City University of New York, the NYC Department of Education and the Queens and Brooklyn Public Libraries. It provides educational opportunities for adults and older youth, such as Adult Basic Education (ABE), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and test preparation.
