What your money funds:
The Recreational Services program is responsible for recreational and educational programs in a structured environment for youth, teens and adults. The funding is used to pay employees who run the programs and monitor the facilities, as well as to support the needs of each program. These programs take place in parks, playgrounds and recreation centers throughout the five boroughs.
- According to DPR, in FY08, approximately 2.7 million people of all ages used the recreation centers, of which 148,168 were dues-paying members. In that year, approximately 1.5 million people used the City's swimming pools and DPR employed 1,152 lifeguards.
- There are 44 centers throughout the City and they are open an average of 77 hours per week.
- Types of Centers include:
- Recreation Centers: Recreation facilities that are owned and operated by the Parks Department. Paid membership is required to use the facilities' amenities, such as gyms and pools.
- Community Centers: Parks facility with programming operated by community-based organizations.
- Field Houses: Parks facilities that either operate seasonally or offer a limited number of programs.
