What your money funds:

The Community Affairs unit is responsible for fostering community relations with the NYPD. Additionally, the program provides support during tragic times or major events. The unit supports the following program areas:

  1. Youth Programs include:
    1. Police Athletic League (PAL): Independent youth organization that works with NYPD to provide summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.
    2. Law Enforcement Explorers: Educates young men and women about law enforcement, specifically focused on career development, service, leadership, fitness and the outdoors.
    3. Summer Youth Police Academy: Summer program for city youth that has locations in each borough. For two days a week, six weeks in total, the youth learn about law enforcement, using role-plays and demonstration. Participants also learn military drills and take trips to police precincts.
    4. Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT): Classroom program is for 7th and 8th graders to educate them about the consequences of gang involvement.
  2. Immigrant Outreach Unit: Brings together the NYPD and new immigrant communities by giving presentations and providing services, such as liaisons who speak other languages.
  3. Community Programs include:
    1. Precinct Community Councils: There are 76 Community Councils, which hold public meetings at least once a month. Community Councils are forums that provide on-going, direct communication between the police and community.
    2. Civilian Observer Ride-Along Programs: Anyone over the age of 18 can apply to ride with an officer in a patrol car to witness a typical tour of duty. Applicants must have a direct/indirect interest or interaction with the NYPD through an institution/agency, community-based organization or college/university. According to the NYPD, in 2008, 1,657 local community members, university students, law enforcement officials and visitors from the United States and abroad participated in this program.
    3. Clergy Liaison Program: This program helps clergy link the NYPD to their communities. They are trained on topics like bias crime, domestic violence, drug abuse and terrorism. There are approximately 500 clergy members who participate in this program.
