What your money funds:
The Counter-Terrorism Bureau is responsible for reviewing and investigating potential terrorist targets in NYC and developing security measures at these locations. The group works with federal, state and local agencies, as well as private sector organizations. The Bureau has the following programs:
- The Office of the Commissioner of Counter-Terrorism: This office funds the positions of Commissioner, Borough Coordinators and uniformed officers who are responsible for counterterrorism programs in the patrol areas.
- Counterterrorism Deployments: The NYPD has developed certain strategic groups to address specific types of emergencies, such as:
- Hercules: The emergency service unit that conducts patrols at City landmarks.
- Critical Response Vehicle Unit: Uniformed officers from each of the 76 precincts who are responsible for protecting city bridges, transportation facilities and other sensitive locations if there is an attack.
- Transit Order Maintenance Sweeps: Teams of officers who inspect subway trains.
- Counterterrorism Division: This division is responsible for preparing the NYPD to respond to terrorism threats and attacks. The division also trains other City officials to follow NYPD's protocols. The division has the following groups:
- SHIELD: Manages the public-private security partnership, providing training and information to the private sector.
- Training Section: Develops and delivers counterterrorism training to the patrol force and to other law enforcement agencies and groups.
- Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives Section: Researches and tests technologies to combat chemical warfare and develops policies for usage of such tactics.
