What your money funds:
The Patrol Unit is responsible for protecting NYC residents, visitors, and their property, as well as reducing crime and improving the quality of life. With over 76 precincts in the city, the department is able to maintain and deploy a staff of officers who are trained to respond to emergencies and minimize harm to the public.
- According to NYPD, in 2008 they responded to and recorded 523 murders, 1,296 rapes, 22,310 robberies, 16,173 assaults, 44,028 larceny cases, and 12,482 auto larceny cases.
- "Zero-Tolerance" was instituted over ten years ago as a full-scale strategic attack on all crime and disorder in the City. In particular it focuses on the enforcement of "quality of life offenses" such as drinking alcoholic beverages in the street, urinating in public, panhandling, loud radios, graffiti and disorderly conduct.
- Operation Impact is a new initiative that teams newly graduated officers with experienced supervisors. They are deployed into "Impact Zones" that are known for serious crimes. In FY08, major felony crimes were reduced by 14% in the 12 designated Impact Zones.
