This unit is tasked with keeping the public safe and secure when they are using public or private transportation. These officers monitor the flow of traffic on city streets and highways, and maintain the safety of pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and passengers by enforcing traffic laws.

1. According to the Department, the overall number of traffic fatalities in FY08 between a motorist and passenger was 123, and between a bicyclist and pedestrian, 177. There were also 25 DWI related fatalities.
2. According to the Department, in FY08 they issued 190,589 summonses for cell phone usage while driving.
