What your money funds:
This program includes the cleaning of city streets and collection of curbside refuse and recycling for every residential household, public school, and many large institutions within the Bronx. Because a separate bureau of DSNY provides supplies and equipment for this program, this budget only covers the salaries of the collectors and street cleaners.
- Waste Collection: According to DSNY, in FY07, the Citywide cost of collecting waste was $179 per ton and the disposal cost was $129 per ton, totaling a cost to the City of $308 per ton to dispose of waste. Waste tons collected per truck were down by .2 tons, to 10.2 tons. That year, the City disposed of an average of 11.4 thousand tons per day, totaling 3.5 million tons disposed of for the whole year. FY08 numbers are not yet available for publication, as DSNY waits for the Comptroller's final audit, which is to be released soon.
- Recycling Collection: Recycling Collection: According to DSNY, in FY07, the Citywide cost of collection per ton of recycling was $400 and the cost of disposal was $20 per ton, totaling a cost to the City of $420 per ton to dispose of waste. Recycling revenues were $14 a ton. Recycling is more expensive to collect because metal and glass are larger, and therefore take up more space in a garbage truck. A truck can only hold 5.9 tons of recycling, which is 40% less than its refuse capacity. FY08 numbers are not yet available for publication, as DSNY waits for the Comptroller's final audit, which is to be released soon.
- Collecting Derelict Vehicles: Approximately 1,500 derelict vehicles were collected in FY07 in the Bronx.
