The Enforcement Division governs compliance with the City Code in relation to the maintenance of clean streets, illegal dumping, and the proper storage and disposal of waste and recyclable materials by both residents and commercial establishments.

  1. In FY07, the Enforcement Division issued 382,325 Notices of Violation (NOV) and supervisors from the Department's Bureau of Cleaning and Collection issued an additional 164,503 NOVs, totaling 546,828 NOVs. In addition, another 234,837 parking summons for violations of the alternate side and restricted parking regulations were issued.
  2. The Enforcement Division has a Canine Unit that is dedicated to patrolling the five boroughs and issuing NOVs for quality-of-life violations, such as failure to remove canine waste. In FY07, over 5,200 NOVs were issued for these violations.
  3. The most common violations are dirty sidewalks, failure to clean 18 inches into the street, mixing recyclables with regular waste, and illegal dumping.
