What your money funds:

This program is responsible for providing services to New York City residents who are mentally and/or physically impaired. These services include assistance in obtaining financial benefits and medical services, cleaning services, and eviction prevention services.

  1. Adult Protective Services are available to people 18 years of age and older without regard to income, who are mentally and/or physically impaired and due to impairments are unable to carry out activities on a daily basis.
  2. Anyone concerned about a certain person can make a referral to the ACS Hotline or on the web, if they suspect a person is in need of services. Referrals are kept confidential.
  3. When somebody refers to an individual ACS, the Intake Unit decides if the referred individual appears eligible for services. In order to do so, they make a home visit within three business days, or if the situation appears life threatening, within 24 hours. Here they can see if there is abuse taking place or any other threatening situations.
  4. According to the Department, in FY08 96.9% of all visits were completed within three days of referral. In September 2008, the City received 1,377 referrals for care needed, conducted 3,562 assessments and had 5,950 adults under their care
  5. When an individual is determined eligible for services, a caseworker develops a service plan that can include any of the following: Referral for psychiatric and/or medical examination and ongoing care, assistance in obtaining and recertifying Medicaid, Home Care, cash assistance benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, applications for payment of rental and utility arrears, financial management of Social Security benefits, referrals to the NYPD and District Attorney to address allegations of exploitation and abuse, and heavy-duty cleaning services (and more).
  6. Division of Voluntary and Proprietary Homes for Adults: Develops and monitors supervised housing for adults 18 years of age and older who are eligible for financial assistance.. These state-licensed private homes provide -- at a minimum -- meals, housekeeping and laundry.
  7. Division of Post Institutional Services: Assists patients who will be released or discharged from New York State Office of Mental Health facilities after in-patient care of five years or more.
