What your money funds:

The Department of Transportation is responsible for inspecting, engineering and repairing all city-owned bridges, as well as any administration that is related to the central control of these bridges.

  1. The DOT owns and operates 789 structures, including 758 non-movable bridges, 25 movable bridges and 6 tunnels. Of the 789 bridges, 20 connect boroughs. Of the remaining 769, 20% are in the Bronx, 23% are in Brooklyn, 23% are in Manhattan, 26% are in Queens and 8% are in Staten Island. The Bridge Division is divided into the following units:
    1. Roadway Bridges
    2. East River Bridges/Moving Bridges/Tunnels
    3. Engineering Review
    4. Bridge Maintenance/Inspections/Operations
    5. Specialty Engineering and Construction
    6. General Management Support
  2. Non-Movable Bridges: The Queensboro Bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge are the most highly trafficked bridges in the City and are known as the four main East River Bridges.
    1. According to DOT, on an average weekday in 2006, Queensboro Bridge [http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bridges/bridges.shtml] had approximately 186,110 vehicles crossings. In the same year, the Brooklyn Bridge [http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bridges/bridges.shtml] had 126,805, the Williamsburg Bridge [http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bridges/bridges.shtml] had 107,040 and the Manhattan Bridge [http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bridges/bridges.shtml] had 74,621.
  3. Movable Bridges: For a ship to pass through a movable bridge, 2-4 hours prior notice to the Bridges Department is required.
