This program funds the employment benefits for the Department of Education employees. It includes all health and welfare costs, including their pension plan, vacation funds, training, and other employee benefit packages.
- In FY08, there were 79,109 teachers in the school system, including teachers for special programs. Teachers participate in the City's pension program and receive fringe benefits like health care and vacation days.
- The Teachers' Retirement System of the City of New York (TRS) was established 1917 to replace the existing New York City Teachers' Retirement Fund. TRS membership is available to educators who work for the Department of Education of the City of New York, the City University of New York, or participating New York City Charter Schools. Overall, its programs serve more than 178,000 in-service members, retirees, and beneficiaries.
