What your money funds:

This program funds the school safety expenses in the New York public school system. School safety is a joint program funded by both New York Police Department and Department of Education. All school safety services, which include police officers at schools, are conducted through contracts with the Police Department, therefore, traffic officers are paid through the NYPD.

  1. According to the NYPD, in FY08 there were approximately 1,050 "major crimes" on or around school premises. These include rape, murder, robbery, burglary, and auto larceny.
  2. According to the NYPD, in FY07 there were 713 gang motivated incidents and in FY08 there were 577 on or surrounding school premises. In FY05, such incidents totaled 520 per year.
