What your money funds:
The Bureau of Emergency Services (EMS), which includes Certified First Responder-Defibrillation trained personnel, is tasked with all pre-hospital emergency medical care and ambulance transport.
- There are five EMS divisions in the City - one for each borough. There are 32 EMS stations, which are governed by a Central Call-Center. The stations provide bases for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) workers. The City employs approximately 2,700 EMTs.
- FDNY Ambulances are staffed by uniformed service EMTs and paramedics of the FDNY or civilian EMTs and paramedics working for non-profit, 'voluntary' hospitals. It is the largest public, non-profit ambulance partnership in the world.
- In 2007, EMTs and FDNY paramedics conducted approximately 1.35 million "runs" (medical emergency responses). In FY08, the EMS ambulance average response time to life-threatening emergencies was six minutes and thirty-nine seconds.
- According to the Mayor's Management Report, in FY08, the average cost of an ambulance tour per day was $1,457. In 2007, FDNY conducted an average of 543 ambulance tours a day, and responded to approximately 3,300 emergencies a day.
- Carbon Monoxide Monitoring Program: EMS Operations and the Office of Medical Affairs initiated a program to evaluate carbon monoxide levels (caused by exposure to the gas). Recently, this program has been expanded to include routine evaluation of all firefighting and EMS personnel who operate at third-alarm or greater assignments. (Third-alarm means third response to emergency).
