What your money funds:
This program funds the Bureau of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention & Control, which is responsible for promoting healthy sexual behavior and reducing the impact of STDs.
- Counseling and Diagnosis Services: The Bureau provides free and confidential health clinics for anyone in need of counseling, testing and diagnosis services. There are clinics in all five boroughs, open five days a week, and some are open on Saturdays. Minors do not need parental consent to go.
- The New York City Health Code requires that all health care providers report cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, chancroid, granuloma inguinal, LGV, and neonatal herpes.
- In FY08, 965 cases of syphilis were diagnosed in NYC. This was a 20% increase from the year prior.
- In 2007, there were a total of 50,755 cases of chlamydia and 10,310 cases of gonorrhea.
- In FY08, DOHMH distributed about 40,000 male condoms to New Yorkers.
