What your money funds:
This program is responsible for reducing health inequalities across the City through educational programs, community support, and research. It gives special attention to high-need neighborhoods that have been identified in East and Central Harlem, the South Bronx, and North and Central Brooklyn. In these neighborhoods, residents are more likely to experience serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, premature death and obesity. For example, 1 in 3 adults in East Harlem is obese and in Bushwick and Williamsburg, more than half the residents do not exercise at all. Some of the District Public Health Office's duties include:
- Administering programs on priority health issues - free programs include exercise classes, teen pregnancy outreach, and asthma management education.
- Informing, developing, and advocating for policy change in these neighborhoods.
- Conducting research and disseminating public health information online, through mailings, and public forums. Such recent reports include a report on obesity in Harlem, a report on access to healthy foods in Brooklyn, and a brochure on teen sexual health for North Bronx. The office also creates community profiles to understands the needs in these high risk neighborhoods.
- Supporting and assisting community residents and organizations by working closely with community boards.
