What your money funds:

This program funds the Division of Epidemiology, which is tasked with collecting, analyzing and disseminating public health data regarding New York City residents. The results should be a focused response to ongoing public health issues and emergencies. The following are some of its major projects and divisions:

  1. EpiQuery: website designed to guide users through basic data analyses on several datasets about NYC health statistics. In FY06, 5,409 people accessed the data site, in addition to its usage by internal employees of DOHMH and the City.
  2. Community Health Survey: annual cross-sectional survey that samples approximately 10,000 adults aged 18 and older from all five boroughs of New York City. Data from this goes toward Community Health Profiles and Vital Signs Reports, a four-page special reports feature information on critical aspects.
  3. Injury Epidemiology: purpose is to monitor both intentional and unintentional injuries in New York City over time and to identify populations and areas at risk. The program monitors mortality data, hospital discharge data, and treated and released case data from a sample of NYC's emergency departments. In 2002, injuries ranked in the top 10 leading causes of death for all New Yorkers. For teens and young adults aged 15 to 34 years, injury ranked first as the cause of death. Injuries ranked second as the cause of death for children aged 1 to 14 years.
  4. Psychiatric Epidemiology: purpose is to analyze data to assess prevalence and trends in mental hygiene outcomes and to providing technical assistance to other divisions in DOHMH regarding data collection, analysis, interpretation and dissemination.
