What your money funds:
This program is tasked with preventing the spread of the West Nile Virus by monitoring humans and animal species for the presence of the virus. The division is responsible for educating the public about prevention, detection and steps to take if diagnosed with the disease.
- In 2007, there were 18 reported cases of the virus within NYC.
- The City's main goal is to decrease the number of adult mosquitoes by eliminating breeding sites. The City conducts sprayings throughout the summer and early fall if necessary, and they spray in limited areas that are deemed in need of the pesticides. The City also regularly tests mosquitoes for West Nile virus throughout the spring and summer.
- If a case of West Nile is reported and confirmed, DOHMH is responsible for alerting the local area where the case sprung up and assisting residents with their questions and concerns.
