What your money funds:

  1. Forty-nine shelters throughout the City - 32 for homeless men, 25 for homeless women and 8 for both men and women.
  2. Of these 49 shelters, only four are operated directly by the City; the other 45 are operated by contractors and funded by the City.
  3. The shelter system contains a total of 7,500 beds. About 91% of the beds are occupied on an average night, housing approximately 6,850 individuals. Last year, homeless individuals who came to a shelter stayed an average of 87 individual nights throughout the year, and 87 nights during the year, with 22-consecutive day stays.
  4. According to DHS, in total, about 9,400 individuals stayed in a shelter on one or more nights during 2008.
  5. According to DHS, it cost the city approximately $73.00 per night to shelter a homeless individual in 2007. The average individual who uses the system costs the city $6,351 per year.
